Help Make Our Fundraiser A Blooming Success

Here we are just having finished the hottest July on record.  Our long summers are sort of like the long, cold winters in Minnesota.  Just like Minnesotans who have to remind themselves that spring will come, we, also, have to remind ourselves that spring will come in Phoenix in February, March, April, and May.  We can have our flowers in our yards and on the Church property this winter and spring!

In Phoenix we buy bulbs now and put them in the refrigerator until early January.  Then we take them out of the refrigerator and plant them either in pots or in the ground outside.   Viola!  The bulbs will think winter is over and will begin to grow.  Once bulbs are established, they will continue to grow and multiply for many years.

West Valley will be selling bulbs as a fund-raiser between now and September 15th.  The bulbs will be delivered to you on the last Sunday in September, which is September 28th.  Half of the money spent on bulbs goes to the Church!  On Sunday, September 4th and Sunday, September 11th I’ll have beautiful brochures and order forms for you to order bulbs for yourself and to encourage your friends, coworkers, neighbors, and family members to order bulbs for themselves and their friends, coworkers, neighbors, and family members.

I need to have the orders and the money in hand by September 15th because that is the last day to send the money and orders into the company.

The brochure shows thirteen groups of bulbs – iris, daffodils, crocuses, allium, stargazer lilies, hyacinth, lavender mountain lilies, and tulips.  When you study the brochure, you will notice that different kinds of bulbs can be grown in certain zones.  Phoenix is considered Zone 9.  So the bulbs that can be grown in Zone 9 are best for Phoenix.  Beautiful as tulips are, they are not recommended for Phoenix!

If you wish to purchase bulbs for the Church, Karla Schreiber, our Landscaping Chairperson, recommends Lavender Mountain Lilies that can be planted around the trees and Stargazer Lilies that would look nice in the northwest square in front of the Religious Education building.
